Blade Material and Finishes

I am currently using carbon steels including, O-1, 1095, and 5160 series. I have chosen this type of steel because it is traditional, produces very strong blades, and is pleasant to work or forge. Very importantly, it allows me to do my own heat treatment.

The only disadvantage I can find to this type of steel is that it may rust. To care for these blades you must keep a thin coat of oil or preservative on them at all times. Do not allow them to remain in contact with water or dampness. Give them the same type of care as a fine firearm. This steel also may discolor or develop a “patina” as it contacts various materials over time. In no way does this affect the performance of your knife. Some customers actually enjoy the ability of these blades to age. I do offer options that will reduce the rust chance and virtually eliminate discoloration. I offer an antique plum brown finish, blueing finish, and the mustard finish. These are options you can consider when placing a custom order.

Handle Material and Options

You can choose from a wide variety of handle materials or provide your own special handle material when making a custom order. It's almost mind boggling, which is why I have my standard models that blend nice design elements together for you. I will also work with slight modifications to my designs, such as blade length. We will discuss all of the options when you place your order and then I will be able to quote you a price.

See my photo gallery for some different examples of handle materials, pins, and guards.

Laminates — (dymondwood or packawood) available by special order.

Other custom options include:
Mosaic pins ($5 each)
Guard material – brass, copper, nickel silver, stainless steel.
Handle liner material – in stock colors: white, black, and red.
Blade Finishes (approximately $15 each blade)

One Last Request...
Please indulge in telling me a little about yourself or who the knife is for when you order. Things such as where and how you might use the knife are good to know. I enjoy envisioning the person using the knife as I make it! Bringing this type of pleasure to the process of making the knife is vital to the end result.
